Decision on Ukraine-returned medical students soon: Centre to SC

New Delhi: The central government on Monday told the Supreme Court that it has evacuated over 22,000 students from war-torn Ukraine. The Centre also submitted that it will soon take a decision on the matter concerning the continuation of studies of these Ukraine-returned students in Indian colleges.

Attorney General K K Venugopal who were appearing for the Centre submitted, “A mammoth job has been done by the government and 22,500 students have been brought back. The government is looking into the representation (of students) and the government will look into it,” Live Law reported.

A bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Krishna Murari was hearing the matter. Afterwards, the bench closed two cases.

One of the PIL was filed by Lawyer Vishal Tiwari in his personal capacity. In his plea, he expressed concern over the resumption of studies of those who were pursuing medical studies in the Ukrainian universities but had to return to India due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Another plea was filed by Fathima Ahana who is a resident of Bengaluru and pursuing MBBS in Ukraine's Odessa. Given the situation in Ukraine due to the conflict with Russia, Fathima sought the directions to the Centre to take diplomatic steps in order to rescue her and other students stranded in the war-hit country. She also asked for the permission to cross the check point in Moldova from Ukraine enroute to Romania for boarding the Air India evacuation flight.
