The FBI had been searching for the missing Americans since Friday, when they were kidnapped. According to a relative of one of the victims, they had traveled together from South Carolina so one of them could receive a tummy tuck from a Matamoros doctor.
Unfortunately, shortly after entering Mexico, the group was caught in the crossfire of rival cartel groups. A video showed them being forced into the back of a pickup truck by gunmen.
During a news conference on Tuesday, the governor confirmed the deaths and provided an update on the status of the survivors. He did not share any additional details about where or how they were found.
Mexican officials have reported that a Mexican woman also died in the crossfire on Friday. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing violence and terror in Matamoros, a city controlled by factions of the powerful Gulf drug cartel. The state of Tamaulipas has seen thousands of people disappear amid the ongoing violence.
